THE PRESIDENT'S PRATTLE - March 2010

13 March 2010

The weather was much kinder to us for the last meeting, treating us to a great evening for the BBQ. Many thanks to the Social Committee for putting on a great spread. Bev Morrison was back with us and at the work bench, thanks Bev and good to have you with us. Thanks again John Fletcher for bringing the trailer with the BBQ plates and gas.

The crowds of the annual pilgrimage to our beautiful town have receded just in time for us to cope with the humidity of February. Some say it gets too busy with the holiday
makers at this time of year but I think it is good that everyone wants to come to our town to enjoy what we have all year round.

We have a busy year coming up with plenty of events to choose from and John Fletcher has received a couple of requests to programme some pleasant Sunday drives to anywhere where we could have a picnic lunch at the destination. This will encourage those who like to drive their vehicles to get them out of their respective garages show them off on the road. If you know of a pleasant drive to a nice relaxing destination for lunch, please speak with John as most of us will probably know of at least one or two good ideas.

To all our members on the not so well list I wish you a speedy recovery.
Take good care of yourselves. See you soon.

Peter

1. Regarding Run Sheets for club runs
2. Club Telegraph
3. Historic Vehicle Policy

1. IMPORTANT NOTICE - July 09

Whoever organises a run is responsible for the run sheet (ie bringing it along). Individual members are responsible for putting their names and car details on the sheet. If your name is not on the sheet you WILL NOT appear in the magazine as having attended.

Also they should collect any money required on the day. Again, individual members are responsible for placing their name and car details on the run sheet.

It is important that these few simple rules are adhered to. Thank you for your
support???..

A Thought from The Chaplain

13 March 2010

Don't be fenced in!!!

One of the few creatures on earth that can out-jump Michael Jordon is the Impala. This is an African deer with a supercharged spring. It has a vertical leap of over 2 metres and can broad jump over 9 metres. You would think that the zoos of the world would find it impossible to keep such an animal enclosed.
Not so! It's rather easy. Because the experts discovered
something about the Impala. It will not jump unless it can see where it is
going to land. Therefore, a solid wall even less than 2 metres tall is a sufficient
enclosure.
Sometimes I'm like the Impala wanting to know exactly where and how I will 'land'. But life isn't always like that is it? We often have to take chances, risks?.sometimes simply trust. One of my recent prayers is that God will encourage me to be more of a risk taker. We are designed, like the Impala, to really jump/make a difference to our world and those around us. Don't let anything fence you in!
Safe traveling
Denis

Road Ramblings

13 March 2010

Another car that has reached late middle age is the much maligned Chevrolet Corvair. The car consumer rights advocate Ralph Nader once called 'Unsafe at any speed' because of its dangerous steering column and dodgy handling. The Corvair is turning 50. The Chevrolet Corvair was a car produced by the Chevrolet division of GM between 1960-1969 . The Corvair was offered in a wide range of body styles, including four-door sedans , two-door coupes, convertibles and station wagons. The Corvair was discontinued in May 1969 due to plummeting sales. A variety of factors contributed to the model's 96-percent drop in sales from 1965 to the last 1969 models. The Corvair faced increasing competition from the Ford Mustang and other Pony Cars. Chevrolet built 1.8million Corvairs over the car's production life but history has ruled this revolutionary rear engined car a 'lemon'. There are a few preserved examples in Australia but they are few and far between and now very collectible. Safe motoring and God bless. Chris

Australia Day Outing Tuesday 26 January 2010John Wright Park Tuncurry

13 March 2010

The Australia Day display of GLHAC vehicles which was held in John Wright Park was well attended by our members, and was also supported by members of other Clubs. Ron Pulling was on the ball and counted the total vehicles on the field and advised me that the roll up was in the order of 53 vehicles at the time he counted. As usual the number floats as some vehicles left very early and other vehicles arrived later.
Michelle and I thought we would arrive early at about 7.45 am but we were well beaten by about half a dozen early risers. Ray Sonter was an early starter and was assisting the SES with the barricades used for traffic control . Also, Peter Darbin had arrived early, ensured the Park was OK for us with no hassals to be addressed, left his Caddy and went back to get his Zephyr. Thanks Ray and Peter for getting there early to set up. When things settled down a little Ray picked up Keith and Gwenda Batchelor in their 1965 falcon. It was also great to see Bev Morrison with us for the day. John Fletcher arrived with his trailer containing the Gazebos. John was not well at all and went home after the gazebo was erected, well almost. He commenced to erect his own gazebo which I thought was a lovely gesture for Brenda's comfort , but then the gazebo was placed over the Singer to keep it in the shade. Well Brenda, you know exactly where you are placed in John's hierarchy of needs.
The weather was very warm but bearable due to the very light breeze off the water. Rotary arrived and set up their tents and BBQs ready to cater for the lunch time onslaught. The entertainment arrived and the show was on. Once again the roll up of vehicles was varied this time with more Jags than MGBs.
The Flag raising ceremony in the park which was attended by the Mayor of Forster was held about 1.45pm. This was missed by many of the owners of the vehicles as they had apparently had enough of the heat and had left the field early. All in all a well attended and successful day was had by all who attended. Peter Cole

Events -- New Directions by John Fletcher Events Co-ordinator

3 February 2009

Events New Directions - John Fletcher Events Co-ordinator

This year the event happenings are undergoing change, I hope for the better as a team of four are reviewing the clubs activities. Your team is John Fletcher, Ken McDonald, Peter Darbin and Brian Payne all are committed not only doing the job well but also are keen to try some new innovations rather than do as was done before. With changes there is always reaction we hope in a positive sense but if there is a need for any criticism because it's not working, then let it be constructive, seeking improvement rather than beer grumbling. All event committee members are approachable, so if there is problems talk to one of us, by the way good feedback is also helpful for continued planning.

Change one; No more little bits of paper issued just before an event. All events must be planned three months in advance so full details can be published in the Exhaust Notes, on the clubs web site, and on the twelve monthly calendar that will be on display at each general meeting. In this month's Exhaust Notes issue, have a look at the first page ?EVENTS IN DETAIL? producing event detail in this matter means the information is available for continued easy review by the members. You will note a team leader is nominated so should a member require special needs or consideration to attend the event you know who to contact.

Change two; TEAM LEADERS at the last meeting there was a strong response on the question of Sunday events that were not just static displays and also breakfast runs. There was a negative response when a question was put looking for event organisers. Because this request is distasteful in future Team Leaders will be sourced. A Team Leader is one who may have an event concept. He/she could approach the event committee and with the committee plan and work out the logistics, then have the event added on to the calendar. NB a Breakfast Cryptic de tour of Forster - Tuncurry has been added so all we need is for TEAM LEADERS to come forward for future events.

Change Three; A form has been established requesting member's mobile phone numbers, e-mail addresses and if a CB Radio is available. Future planning of driving events may mean cars will be arranged in groups for different departure times. The groups could be Rev Heads, Petrol Heads, Cobbs Coaches and Stanley Steamers who joins which group will be sorted out later. CB Radio and mobile phones will be used for journey communication. The e-mail address is a form of quick broadcasting communication with members if required, should an event have to be changed for some reason. So please enter your details as you may be the who one needs help on an event.

Change Four; Some events require Team Leaders to collect funds to cover costs for lunches etc. There will be an appropriate form of collection implemented to record these actions and when necessary a ticket receipt will be issued to the member. Lunch monies if required to be group paid on behalf of the Members, is to be paid to the Team Leader on arrival at the assembly location.
Happy and safe motoring to all our members and especially to the future TEAM LEADERS.

A Brief History of the Great Lakes Historic Automobile Club Inc

7 October 2009

Well in the beginning, in a previous life I was a bank manager with the State Bank of NSW. I was transferred in late 1991 from manager Coffs Harbour to manage the Bank's then Tuncurry Branch (yes there was more than one bank in Tuncurry at that time, four actually). In Coffs I had been vice president of the Coffs Harbour Veteran & Vintage Car Club, and had my 1961 Bedford coach and 1952 AEC Regal bus on their plates. I and my family enjoyed many wonderful activities with the Coffs Club. They were a great group of people. On my arrival in the Great Lakes I found no classic car club. I got together with local car identities Allen Curtis and Col McDonald and suggested to them that there was a need for a Club locally. My expertise was the legal, constitutional and formation aspects of forming a club while Allen and Col had the local knowledge of those who might make up our formation membership, not to mention between them owning some thirty or forty cars. Our first meeting was held at the Curtis Collection in December 1991, our first run to One Mile Beach in January in 1992. Perusing our first membership list, foundation members still in the club are John Amato, Dick Cawley, John Daniel, Peter Darbin, and myself. The foundation membership contained twenty seven names Over the fifteen years since inception the Club has had four presidents, Col McDonald, Ron Taaffe and Bob Burns, and our current incumbent Ray Sonter. There has been three treasurers - Garry Cater, Graham Smith & Brian Rees, one Registrar and Assistant Registrar John Daniel and John Amato, and one secretary, myself.A club magazine was commenced just after the club's inception, the first magazine to carry the name Exhaust Notes published in June 1992. Bruce Molin thought of the name and was the foundation editor. I took over in October 1992 and have filled the roll ever since. The magazine has come a long way, being initially put together with a typewriter and produced at Old Bar School. In November 1994 Eric from EDN Print & Mail in Leura took over printing the magazine, with an upgrade in quality, In 2005 Bookworks of Lakemba took over. I started preparing the magazine on a computer a few years later. The magazine is now done electronically. The Club was initially formed with a charter to be a family based club where the cars are not our prime concern, people are. The cars are a common interest. Our club I am happy to say, I feel has met that first up aim.The committee we have had over the years from the president down have done a fabulous job, and I as founder would like to thank them for all the hard work. But at the end of the day a club is as only as good as its members, and this is where we are big winners. Our club is one of the very best around. We have a good reputation and the number of new folk joining us month after month is evidence of this..God blessChris GoodsellClub Founder

All British Day

13 March 2010

All British Day at Uraidla Showground in the Barossa Valley
Sunday 14 February 2010
Brian & Judy Payne visited this event (very romantic Brian)
This very popular event is just one of the many car club events that are on offer almost every Sunday in the Adelaide area, and it would probably be a fair guess to say that, per head of population, Adelaide possibly has more veteran and vintage cars on its roads than the larger states. The annual 'All British Day' at Uraidla in the heart of the Barossa Valley each year is a good example of this and while not as large as our own 'All British' day at King's, which draws enthusiasts from all over Sydney/Newcastle/ Wollongong areas, the Uraidla event manages to consistently have over 800 vehicles turning up for the day. In all 60 clubs were represented on the day, the vast majority from within a 50 km radius, with only the odd few from out of town and country Victoria. With two of our extended family members now into 'old' cars and members of the Gawler Veteran, Vintage & Classic Vehicle Club, Judy and I joined them all on Valentine's Day for the picnic day in the Barossa. Fortunately they both have a british car, and somehow we all managed to climb into a 1959 Austin A60 Cambridge and a 1939 Morris 10 for the 100km round trip. By far the biggest display was from the jaguar Classic Car Club of SA who alone fielded over 65 cars from a 1934 SS 1 Four Light, an 1939 Jaguar SS, numerous Mark 4's/5's etc in both saloon and drophead coupes body styles.Amongst several other clubs a further 30/40 another other Jaguars were on the paddock, including the ex Bib Stillwell's racing 1951 Jaguar XK 120 which the owner actually drove to the event from Colac in Victoria. Gawler Car Club fielded over 30 vehicles and put on an excellent bacon and egg breakfast for members and guests just out of town for just $3, with optional pancakes with maple syrup and cream for the princely sum of just $1...needless to say it was great day for all concerned!

Coffee RunThursday 28 January 2010

13 March 2010

Twelve members were at the rock pool for the coffee run. Rod Scott-Young in his new Ford.  He decided that scrapbooking was more fun and left us to it. (No, not really, only joking but he did leave)
The remaining ten us us drove out to the Lakeside Cafe, where we morning tea with a view.  It really is pleasant there with a lovely view across the lake.  They do a nice milkshake as well!
Eventually John and Hal left to drive to Nabiac via Bulladelah, where they met up with Percy for lunch.
The rest of us decided not to brave the roadworks Peter Darbin had warned us about, and returned to Forster.

NRMA MOTORFEST 2010 Australia Day 26 January?Sydney

13 March 2010

NRMA MOTORFEST 2010
Australia Day 26 January-Sydney
In my opinion as the best annual motoring event in the country is NRMA Motorfest is held in Sydney's prettiest and most historic thoroughfare Macquarie Street every Australia Day.
This was the 25th Motorfest and in 2010 celebrated the 100th birthday of that famous Italian
marque Alfa Romeo with a display of their fine workmanship. It was also NRMA's 90th birthday, Here I must congratulate the NRMA on their meticulous preservation of their historical icons. On show were road service vehicles, basically from day one, a 1930's Harley Davidson motor bike and sidecar, A Morris J Van, A Morris Minor and HD Holden to name a few. Their photographic history was also extensive. As is the collection of badges and memorabilia.
On the car side, on show were cars that covered the spectrum of historic motoring from the
Goggomobile micro car to the huge and stately Rolls Royce. Just about every brand of motor
vehicle through the ages was there.
Some sixteen vintage double and single decker buses from the Sydney Bus Museum (now closed) carried huge crowds on a free circular city service.
If you tire of the crowds and the cars you could have retired to the basement of the historic politicians church St Stephens for a cup of coffee and some pikelets before going up stairs into the church proper to listen to organ recitals
Some 400000 people enjoyed the sites and sounds of Motorfest. Congratulation to organiser John Flower and the NRMA.
Members of our Club attending were:
1954 MG Magnette (29610H) David & Denise Kelvin 1974 Haflinger (24318H) Bruce Yarnold
1963 Renault R4 ((21004H) Bruce & Irene Hall 1998 Mitsubishi Magna Brian & Judy Payne

Respite Run to HarringtonSaturday 13 February 2010

13 March 2010

The Respite run to Harrington saw 17 friends arrive looking forward to a good day out.  It is a very popular outing with the group and this was the largest number to attend. Harrington is always a picturesque place to visit.  The weather was good, we found some picnic tables and a tree for shade, so after eating, those who were able went for a walk on the breakwall, then there was
only time for a drink and back into the cars for home. When asked what they enjoyed most, Kristin said she like the food and 16 others agreed.  Gary liked going in  the BLUE car, Phebe liked going out with all the people, Elle and Peter liked going in the cars and everybody agreed with them.
Thank you to those who attended, for your cars, food and friendship and thank you to Ray for organising the day it was most appreciated.

Volvo's Three-Point Safety Belt Celebrates 50 Years of Saving Lives

8 September 2009

Thursday 13 August 2009 marked the 50th anniversary of the life-saving V-shaped three-point seat belt, invented by Volvo Engineer Nils Bohlin in 1959, and Volvo's visionary open patent which granted free use of the design to all other car manufacturers.
The design is as obvious as it is intelligent.  Easily fastened with one hand, it secures the seat's occupant in place with a belt across the chest and another across the hips - a vast improvement on the previous two-point waist restraint.
Today, the simple 'click-clack front-and-back' has been recognised worldwide as the most widely used and significant safety innovation in the automobile's more than 120 year long history.  It is estimated that more than a million people owe their lives[1] to the seat belt, and it has saved many times that number of people from serious injury.  It is also recognised as one of the eight patents to have the greatest significance for humanity during the hundred years from 1885 to 1985[2].
?The decision to release the three point seat belt patent was visionary and in line with Volvo's guiding principle of safety,? says Alan Desselss, managing director of Volvo Car Australia. "It's why we like to say there's a little bit of Volvo in every car."
Research indicates that vehicle occupants have a 50 per cent better chance of surviving a crash, if they are wearing a seat belt, reducing the risk of fatalities and serious injuries from collisions. Most countries have now legalised the use of seatbelts for all drivers, although seat belt use in some areas is as low as 3.8 per cent[3].
The real breakthrough in legislation actually came from Victoria, which was the first state worldwide to draw up legislation in 1970 requiring not just the fitting of seat belts, but also their actual use.  In the first year of law, traffic fatalities in the state dropped by 18 per cent.   New South Wales followed with similar legislation a year later and today, everyone but taxi drivers are legally required across Australia to wear seatbelts front and back.
The future of the seatbelt is constantly evolving. Volvo is exploring ways to improve their design and make the process of wearing a seat belt easier and even safer.   A four point attachment is under discussion as is a motorised belt that tightens the belt and places the driver in the right position in potentially hazardous situations.
In the US today, only 83 percent of front-seat passengers use their seat belt even thought seat belt legislation is enforced in all states except for New Hampshire.  On the island of Sakhalin in Russia, safety belt use is as low as 3.8 per cent, and only 23 per cent of Costa Rican and South Korean drivers used seatbelts up until legislation enforcements in the mid 2000's.
Volvo shared patent with all car manufacturers
Estimated to have saved over one million lives globally
Victoria the first state worldwide to legislate seat belt fitment and usage
