THE PRESIDENT'S PRATTLE
6 December 2011
Well the silly season is almost upon us again, along with the AGM, and the 20th anniversary / Christmas party celebration is not far off now. I Look forward to enjoying it with those of you that are attending.
Again many thanks to those who worked extremely hard at all functions that our club either hosted or arranged.
New news for the year is that we are now officially part of the HUB and as such will have our turn at hosting a hub rally in the future. This will be a another challenge that I'm sure you will be able to handle with no dramas.
As part of our hard earned efforts at the bush council rally our little investment has enabled us to purchase for the clubs use a new urn, which has been put to the test and does boil water ! We will now no longer have to beg ,borrow or steal others urns that had in the past left us in cold water so to speak, when they failed to proceed. Where some of our brave members (barristers) faced an angry decaffinated mob.
This is my last presidents prattle I look forward to reading this column which will be written by your newly elected president.
See you somewhere in the great outdoors. Many thanks to those who have supported both Michelle and myself over the last two busy years.
Peter

FIRST CARS?????
A few of us have put pen to paper to share both the joy and the grazed knuckles associated with our first car. Personally, I found them so interesting I started to browse further afield focusing on 'famous' people, who are known to most of us. Not surprisingly, some of their 'firsts' are right out of left field.
Sir STIRLING MOSS
In the gloomy grey days following World War 2 there wasn't much choice, especially if you wanted a bit of zip! Stirling's #1, was a Morgan 3 wheeler, with it's very ordinary two cylinder Matchless 1,000 cc air cooled motor churning out a gutsy 22 HPout front and mounted ahead of the front axle, which he picked up at the tender age of 15 for a mere 50 quid.
MARIO ANDRETTI
Having been a kid in Italy just after World War 2, where big American cars were a status symbol, moving to Nazareth,Pennsylvania, was a dream come true.Along with his twin brother Aldo, the immigrant teenagers knew just what they wanted and settled on a 1957 Bel Air hardtop in bright red, with a white top.Naturally enough, they opted for the 283 cubic inch V-8 with the Power Pack option, which raised the horsepower from 185 to a gutsy 220?most importantly it sported the ?Golden Vee? on the hood.
DAN GURNEY
In 1947 one of Dan's mates was going into the Marine Corps, and needed to sell his car.For the bargain price of $325, Dan was the proud owner of a well used 1933 Ford Roadster V-8. Virtually the same day a dual carby manifold was on the way, and although it barely made any difference to the performance, it sparked Dan's interest in the study of the internal combustion engine!
CARROLL SHELBY
When Carroll turned 14 in 1937, his dad took him down to the Department of Vehicles in downtown Dallas,Texas to get his drivers license?no test just rock up! The vehicle was a 1934 Dodge Sedan, and later that day the young Shelby offered to pick his dad up after work. Within hours, the freshly licensed teenager was picked up on the East Pike in Dallas, doing 80 miles an hour, and was grounded for 6 months!
PIERO FERRARI.
Being the son of Enzo Ferrari, you would assume that the current vice chairman of the company where he had worked since he was a tenager, would have had the pick of the bunch as they slowly rolled off the production line in downtown Maranello! Seems, dad was a huge fan of Alec Issigonis, and had a great respect for his innovative packaging, use of space and engineering excellence. And so it was that Enzo presented his son with his very first car,a shiny new 1963 Morris Mini 993, with it's engine uprated to 1,300 cc, which appropriately enough, was red with a white roof.
So?what was your first car? I'm sure there's a good story just waiting to be shared!

OLD BAR BEACH FESTIVAL Saturday October 1 2011.
1 November 2011
OLD BAR BEACH FESTIVAL
Saturday October 1 2011.
Very cloudy, rain predicted, and yes forecast was right .
Eight club cars arrived at Old Bar and parked alongside lots of cars from other clubs that attended despite the weather.
Swiftly, the ladies had a quick cuppa then off to peruse the enormous markets and various displays on site.
A few sprinkles here and there but mostly the rain stayed away , all was going well until a light aircraft hit a ferris wheel in the carnival area.
This caused the crowd to desert the markets and watch the rescue of two children on the ride and the pilot and passenger from the plane, this took about 90 minutes.
With no major injuries, a sigh of relief was felt as rain started to sprinkle. This bought majority of people to count our blessings and go home.
Not what we really expected but glad of the outcome, made it exciting, hoping 2012 is a better day. Those attending were:
1957 Jaguar Mk2 (29638H) Harvey & Roz Haworth
1963 Morris Traveller (21005H) Bruce & Irene Hall
1964 Plymouth Fury Dick & Marcia Fancourt
1966 Kharman Ghia Dick & Pauline Cawley

All German Day - Newcastle Foreshores, Sunday 20 November 2011
6 December 2011
All German Day
Newcastle Foreshores
Sunday 20 November 2011
This day was organised by the Mercedes Benz Club of Newcastle and saw a roll up of some 99 cars and 2 ExSTA Newcastle buses (Mercedes Benz of course). The trip down was in pleasant conditions but that's where it ended. In came the famous Ozzie heat. The foreshores is a beautiful spot, but very little shade. Moaning aside it was a good day with some beautiful cars on show. Rows of Mercs, Porsches, Audis and VWs. The two exSTA buses (a Mark3 &4 0405 Chassised Mercs) attracted a lot of interest. We walked over to Nobby's and viewed the site of the grounding Pasha Bulka some years ago.
Back to the heat on the trip home: the cabin thermometer in the Merc read 48 degrees. Indeed it was very warm.

A Thought from The Chaplain
6 December 2011
What's Really Important
Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple (started from a garage no less!) died recently. He was a very private person who rarely did interviews; however at one lecture he shared something very profound.
On discussing what makes a life worthwhile. This very famous, very talented and very rich (upwards of 8 billion dollars) gave his opinion. Family. Not designing revolutionary computers. Not acquiring wealth. Not owning property. Family.
This too, is God's viewpoint. Jesus?born into a family. Jesus?living and caring for all. It's not about goods and chattels?life is about people and family in the widest sense of the word. I hope and pray you have time to be with your family this Christmas.
Have a special and blessed Christmas.

PRESIDENT?S REPORT - 2011
6 December 2011
PRESIDENT'S REPORT
This year has seen the Club through some busy times and continual growth with membership. Our new members this year are Bill & Margaret Pearson, Ian McInnes, Phillip Snelling, Tom Ryan, Phil Hawkins, Maria & Bill Bartley, David & Margaret Price and Ian & Norma Andrews. The Club has welcomed them all and I hope they continue to enjoy the companionship and activities available through the Club.
We find ourselves in a strong financial position due the hard work of all as we hosted the Bush Council Rally. We did not set out to make great profits, but due the work of our ladies in the cooking department and raffles and so on, surprisingly it added up to an amount worth investing. This delays the need to raise Club membership fees for such a period of time that will be determined by the return the investment may yield and the investment being able to be sustained.
This was my second year as President and I thank the members for their faith in me to elect me as such.
Disappointingly, ?discussions? in club meetings at times got heated and became a personal attack on members. This type of behavior is entirely unnecessary and inappropriate in your Club. We should endeavour to treat our fellow members and their ideas the way we would wish to be treated ourselves. As we all have our own personal views and opinions on any given matter, others views and opinions should also be respected whether we agree or not.
I look forward, as do we all I'm sure. to another fun filled and enlightening year.
Regards
Peter

Brief History Of GLHAC
1 November 2011
Well in the beginning, in a previous life I was a bank manager with the State Bank of NSW. I was transferred in late 1991 from manager Coffs Harbour to manage the Bank's then Tuncurry Branch (yes there was more than one bank in Tuncurry at that time, four actually). In Coffs I had been vice president of the Coffs Harbour Veteran & Vintage Car Club, and had my 1961 Bedford coach and 1952 AEC Regal bus on their plates. I and my family enjoyed many wonderful activities with the Coffs Club. They were a great group of people. On my arrival in the Great Lakes I found no classic car club. I got together with local car identities Allen Curtis and Col McDonald and suggested to them that there was a need for a Club locally. My expertise was the legal, constitutional and formation aspects of forming a club while Allen and Col had the local knowledge of those who might make up our formation membership, not to mention between them owning some thirty or forty cars. Our first meeting was held at the Curtis Collection in December 1991, our first run to One Mile Beach in January in 1992. Perusing our first membership list, foundation members still in the club are John Amato, Dick Cawley, John Daniel, Peter Darbin, and myself. The foundation membership contained twenty seven names Over the fifteen years since inception the Club has had four presidents, Col McDonald, Ron Taaffe and Bob Burns, and our current incumbent Ray Sonter. There has been three treasurers - Garry Cater, Graham Smith & Brian Rees, one Registrar and Assistant Registrar John Daniel and John Amato, and one secretary, myself.A club magazine was commenced just after the club's inception, the first magazine to carry the name Exhaust Notes published in June 1992. Bruce Molin thought of the name and was the foundation editor. I took over in October 1992 and have filled the roll ever since. The magazine has come a long way, being initially put together with a typewriter and produced at Old Bar School. In November 1994 Eric from EDN Print & Mail in Leura took over printing the magazine, with an upgrade in quality, In 2005 Bookworks of Lakemba took over. I started preparing the magazine on a computer a few years later. The magazine is now done electronically. The Club was initially formed with a charter to be a family based club where the cars are not our prime concern, people are. The cars are a common interest. Our club I am happy to say, I feel has met that first up aim.The committee we have had over the years from the president down have done a fabulous job, and I as founder would like to thank them for all the hard work. But at the end of the day a club is as only as good as its members, and this is where we are big winners. Our club is one of the very best around. We have a good reputation and the number of new folk joining us month after month is evidence of this..
God bless

Melbourne Cup Get Together
The Smith's Home Tuncurry
Tuesday 1 November 2011
In recent years the first Tuesday in November has signalled a gathering at Max & Judy Smith's home in the appropriately named Tulloch Road.
Max & Judy's hospitality has always been of a winning standard and 2011 was right up to scratch.
Members brought a plate of delicious food to share, and all present enjoyed a banquet.
Cliff Stockley and Carol King were our bookies on the day accepting some HUGE bets.
The Cup itself was viewed from the grandstand of the Smith's living room, and the atmosphere was most definitely there.
A number of members dressed to Flemington standard. We even had a jockey on hand to encourage us.
Thank you Max & Judy for another memorable Melbourne Cup Day. Already have forgotten the race winner, but the day remains fresh in my mind.

SECRETARY?S REPORT 2011
6 December 2011
SECRETARY'S REPORT 2011
I simply cannot believe that 20 years has come and gone since I got together with Alan Curtis and Col McDonald and suggested the formation of a car club in the Great Lakes. The rest has been a history of fun, fellowship and achievement. Two decades on in 2011 another successful year has passed with a little controversy to spice it all up.
A big welcome to new members Bill & Margaret Pearson, Ian McInnes, Phillip Snelling, Tom Ryan, Phil Hawkins, Maria Bartley & Bill Bartley, David & Margaret Price and Ian & Norma Andrews and Michael & Marie Power.. I hope you are enjoying your Club,
The Club's Conditional Registration register is made up as follows: MG & Morris 5, Mercedes Benz 4, Austin, Valiant, & Ford 3, Jaguar, Holden Chevrolet & Studebaker 2 and Renault, Rolls Royce, Plymouth, Singer, BMW. Haflinger, AMC, Bedford, Toyota & Triumph one representative each.
2011 saw the highly successful Bush Council Easter Rally. A very well done to Rally Director David Kelvin and the whole rally management team for a fantastic effort. The Club's name was enhanced via the rally.
Late in the year moves were made to change the Club's name badge and other structural facets of the Club, these were rejected by members via a secret vote in a massive show of support (84%)for the current structure. It is quite clear that bulk of members want no change.
Over the year through the efforts of events director Ray Sonter we had to runs with people in respite care. If you haven't shared your hobby with some of these folk do so in 2012, the rewards you receive far outweigh what you are giving. Well done Ray.
2012 saw the passing of a man foundational in the formational years of our Club - Bruce Molin, Bruce was the launch editor of Exhaust Notes and designed our Club badge. Louise Beales was another sad loss from our membership register.
The Club continues to run on its formation ethos that is a people and family club first with the cars as a common interest. We are very much a COUNTRY SOCIAL car club.
I have been privileged to have been part of this Club for the past twenty years. It is a Club of great people with a terrific outlook on life. Thank you for your friendship.
From Vicki and I have a very happy, holy and blessed Christmas and may 2012 be everything you expect it to be.

LOOKING BACK OVER 18YRS AS CLUB PLATES REGISTRAR ---
JOHN DANIEL-ISSUE N0 4
Our foundation treasurer Gary Cater had club plate 007 on Ford T 27, known as the doctors car, as it had a special little box mounted to take the doc's bag. Our next treasurer, Graeme Smith also with a model T 1 ton tray truck. Being a 1923 model he had plate 023. This is a very special vehicle which Graeme built up himself, I am sure with help from his wife Neta. When it came to a brake test I leave it to your imagination. Graeme also had a 1939 Ford V8 on plates 039. As you can see we did have a very good plates system which had its advantages. To list a few - Plate 044 Charlie Paff 1944 Willys army Jeep - Plate 019 Merv Buchanan 1919 Willys Overland - Plate 029 Bill Cole 1929 Overland Whippett - Plate 022 Brian and Judy Payne Mercedes 220S. That's close. Always a little room for latitude in the early days. It's a little like our current plates registrar John Amato reserved plate 028 on the 1/4/98. Never did get used, but John's rods are custom vehicles that are still his pride and joy. (I should say John & Jan's.) Other very good matches were Tom Vinton's plate 037 on his 1937 Plymouth, which is now owned by Tony & Helen Ryan, since Nov 94. This car added to Tony's immaculate AP5 Valiant sedan which is one of the most original cars in the club. - Plate 034 Ray Wellington (dec) 1934 Ford Roadster. - Plate 047 Ray Sonter, our past president, 1947 Dodge. This gives a short version of the use of plates.
Perhaps it is better now, but for my period of time as registrar I enjoyed the privilege of being able to look after the club plates with no trouble over those years.
?.more next issue.
Yours in motoring, John Daniel.

ANNUAL SHOW & SHINE
SUNDAY NOVEMBER 6, 2011 WARM SUNNY DAY IN THE BEAUTIFUL GREAT LAKES AREA AS TWENTY FIVE CARS LINED UP FOR INSPECTION AND JUDGING IN RIVERSIDE CARAVAN PARK AT FAILFORD.
AFTER THE USUAL CUP OF TEA AND A CHAT EVERYONE SET OFF WITH THEIR JUDGING SLIP TO LOOK OVER THE CARS THEY THOUGHT BEST. SURPRISING HOW LONG IT TOOK AS THERE WERE SOME VERY KEEN JUDGES PRESENT.
I DID TAKE NOTE, NOT TOO MANY STOPPED AT MY TOYOTA FOR TOO LONG, OH WELL THAT'S HOW IT GOES.
AFTER JUDGING IT WAS TIME FOR LUNCH. PETER DARBIN AND JOHN AMATO COOKED UP SOME GREAT STEAK AND SAUSAGES, WHILE MARGARET DARBIN, BEV MORRISON AND VAL, DISHED OUT PASTA, COLESLAW AND POTATO SALADS. PLENTY OF SNAGS AND SALAD FOR SECONDS.
SWEET TIME SAW APPLE PIE AND CUSTARD WHICH SEEMED TO GO DOWN PRETTY WELL.
AS THE DAY WAS GETTING PRETTY HOT MOST WERE HAPPY TO SIT AROUND
HAVING A TALK AND LAUGH. ALL PRETTY GOOD.
THANKS TO THOSE THAT CAME AND HELPED TO MAKE THE DAY. I HOPE YOU ALL ENJOYED IT AS MUCH AS I DID.

Farewell to Louise Beales
6 December 2011
Farewell to Louise Beales
It is with sadness we mourn the passing of member Louise Beales.
Louise passed away suddenly whilst on a holiday in Fiji.
Her funeral at Pampoolah was huge. The numbers present at the funeral
reflected the esteem in which Louise was held.
Louise and Tony Beales joined the club on 5 April 2006. Since that time they have been regular attendees at club events in their MGB.
I'm told that their exploits at the Hat Head Rally were 'very interesting'
I didn't know Louise well but always found her friendly and happy with a bright smile for everyone.
To Tony and the entire family our prayers and thoughts remain with you at this sad time.
May your family and friends be an endless source of support.
Chris Goodsell
